Paardrijden in Dalyan

De meeste mensen die voor het eerst naar Dalyan komen, stappen in de ochtend op een boot. En dat is ook terecht: de kanalen, de sazlar, de kaya’s… Maar de atlar staan ook op dezelfde achtergrond, en nog dichterbij dan je denkt. Ze staan niet in de markt. Aan de andere kant van het water, in Çandır, wachten ze in de schaduw, met de geur van stro en een beetje stilte.

The water between us is not a wide sea. The canal is narrow, about sixty metres wide. When you cross over, you have to walk about three hundred metres and then you reach the farm. From the hotel to the canal, to cross it, it usually takes fifteen to twenty minutes. People who are doing it for the first time sometimes say, “Is that all?” Yes, that’s all. If you came without a car, tell us, and we’ll try to pick you up; we communicate by text message.

In our opinion, het is beter om die dag niet te versnellen. Eet je ontbijt, drink een glas water, pak je hoed. Als je in de middagzon op pad gaat, is het voor zowel jou als de paarden een stuk zwaarder. In de ochtendkoudheid of de middagwarmte is de weg anders. Wij koppelen de uren niet aan de minuten; laten we in de zomer de rit van de dag bepalen en praten we over die.

Welk pad wordt gevolgd?

The most frequently told story is the lake tour. It lasts about two hours and covers four and a half kilometres. You cross a small stream – in summer there is little water, in winter a bit more – and then you walk along a sandy stretch to a green path. There are no engines, only bird songs and sometimes the wind. At the end of the path there is a deserted beach. You stay there for half an hour, ride into the lake and then return the same way. In summer, that water break is very welcome. This is not İztuzu; the beach is a separate day, and this is the quiet lake shore next to the reed beds.

Those who want a shorter nature experience go on a spa tour. It’s an hour and a half, two and a half kilometres. This is not a boat trip to the facility in Sultaniye. You get off at an unused spring, there’s no cabin or ticket office. You change into a swimsuit, take a shower when you return to the hotel. If you have dinner plans in the village in the evening, this tour fits comfortably into one day. Those who want both in one day go on a combined tour, which lasts about three hours. The pace is a bit slower, depending on the horses and the group; we’re not in a hurry.

Voor kinderen en voor iedereen die nog nooit gereden is, is er een korte rit in de wagen op de boerderij. Het tempo is hier wat rustiger, de instructeur staat bij je. De lange route is geen “courage test”. Kijk naar het moment. Allereerst moet je elkaar leren kennen, en de volgende dag kan je in het meer. Dat is geen prestatie, maar een stap in de richting van je doel.
