Dalyan

Reiten in Dalyan

Many people who come to Dalyan for the first time get on a boat in the morning. And they are right: the canal, the reeds, the walls on the bank... But the horses are also in the same setting, and closer than you might think. They don’t stand in the market. They are waiting on the other side of the water, in Çandır, with a little shade, a little hay smell, and a little silence.

Horses by the lake
Rest in the lake.

The water between here and there is not a wide sea. The canal is narrow, about sixty meters. When you cross over, you walk for three hundred meters and reach the farm. The journey from the hotel to the canal, the crossing, takes about fifteen to twenty minutes. Those who are doing it for the first time sometimes say, “Is that all?” Yes, that’s all. If you came without a car, tell us, we’ll try to pick you up; we communicate by text message.

We think it’s best not to rush the day. Finish breakfast, get some water, put on your hat. When you set out in the heat of the morning, both you and the horses are a little heavier. In the cool of the morning or the fading of noon, the path is different. We don’t lock the hours into minutes; let’s talk about the day’s rhythm.

Which route should we take?

The most often told route is the lake tour. It’s about two hours, four and a half kilometers. You pass through a small stream — there’s little water in summer, a little more in winter — then you walk up a sandy gap onto a green path. There’s no motor, only birdsong, sometimes the wind. At the end of the road, there’s a deserted coastline. You stay there for half an hour, ride into the lake, then return the same way. In summer, that water break is very welcome. This is not İztuzu; the beach is a separate day, this is the quiet shore by the reed beds.

Those who want a shorter nature walk take the spa tour. It’s an hour and a half, two and a half kilometers. This is not going to the facility in Sultaniye by boat. You ride on a horse, you go down to an unused spring; there’s no cabin, no ticket office. You put on your swimsuit, take a shower when you return to the hotel. If there’s a meal plan in the town that evening, this tour can easily fit in. Those who want both in one day take the combined tour, which is about three hours. The pace is a bit slower, depending on the horses and the group; we’re not in a hurry.

For children and those who have never ridden before, there is also a short ride at the farm. The pace is slower there, and the instructor is with you. Don’t think of the long path as a “courage test.” Look at it as it is on that day. First get to know each other, then go into the lake the next day; it’s not a matter of pride.

The time is not locked to the same minute every day. We are also on Instagram: @caunoshorses — you can also write there.
